...i think a cat/dawg like Donati & the like are trying to "paint new colors" [for lack of better] into today's metal...& many of todays metal players have or do listen to jazz, fusion, & other styles, & incorporated elements of them into theyre playing...forgive my lack of memory, but there's a "metal" gtrst [from a mass-popular 'metal' or hard rock band] who actually recently did a jazz album, & it was not bad at all, IMHO...but i can't place his/the band's name...

BTW...fusion generally [musically] goes over the masses heads for many reasons; one being that, from an early age, we here [in the States, for one] are all exposed to radio & MTV type formats; whereas in some other countries, [while experiencing the same enigma], tend to have more broadebed & eclectic musical tastes...
English pop & the US much moreso r big on what sells...it's not nec about da music, it's about marketing & romanticism & selling an attitude to an age bracket [alltho it is often played by the best timekeepers/players & slickly produced]...
In summation, i guess u r right about it's all about $ [& chicks] [img]wink.gif[/img] ...we could ALL use "some a' 'dat!"

Money and chicks indeed. In a way, he's right. I stress about money, chicks, and school more than anything. But the fact is, none of them have to do with my drumming. Well...I guess drumming and chicks go together to the extent that when I'm playing dance classes I may make a "hot drummer face" if one of the little cuties glances at me while I'm playing. But that's all vanity crap. I'll tell you what turns me off to many fusion drummers...the sound of the drums. IMO, fusion over the years has produced some of the worst drum sounds in history. I love Dave's parts on the Electrik Band stuff, but the drums sound like ass. I find this to be the case on many fusion records from the 80s. I dig the more earthy, organic tones like Airto's drum sound on the first Return to Forever record. God, please go buy this if you don't have it! I see where Bob is coming from about metal ruling. On an emotional level, listening to metal gets me off harder than just about anything (providing it's not shitty metal.) But I would be bored to tears playing in such a situation, seemingly devoid of improvisation. I dunno, so many drum sounds just turn me completely off. I can't deal with heavily-processed, triggered sounds. Where's the personality there? When I really want to tune in to what I love most about this art form, just give me a little four-piece kit with Bill Stewart, Ari Hoenig, or Tain behind it.

Word It's the metel takeover of the fusionheads! Just kidding, but I'm gladd to see that this board is opening up to different styles, for awhile I was considering joining this board but because it seemed mainly a fusion type board I felt a little intimidated. But of course after joining I feel like I should have signed up long ago, this is definately the best drum discussion group on the net, even if sometimes there is a few idiots posting dumb things here and there I love you guys!

Weckl's drums do INDEED sound "like a**" on those recordings [his PLAYING is quite another topic, however [img]wink.gif[/img] ]...
While i sort-of like his drum sound today [& i know we beat this 1 to death too, a while back], i can think off many other drummers that have a much better recorded sound...for toms, Peart's on Power Windows [& some HYF] was nicer, & Simon's toms are WAY better... i just don't like those @#$%&*! white coated heads on toms [except for those musical styles or applications that require it, & except on a snare]...Vinnie's toms on Eric Marienthal's Crossroads' "Spoons" is da schid...ESP da 12"....

Does Henry Rollins count as metal? I love his stuff, and Sim Cain was actually a very good drummer. Come In and Burn had alot of cool grooves on it.

As stupid as your thought process and elaborationis(note:notice how you dig a hole for yourself by ADMITTING you're a mediocre player who can't appreciate high level of musicianship!). But in sum ways you're right, no matter what genre of music u analyze there's always gonna be sum "mediocre" bands coming from the genre and sum good ones, it doesn't matter if it's fusion, Drum & Bass, funk or ghetto rap whatever.

I'm sure Tommy Lee probably feels like he's expressing himself to his fullest in his own musical way. There is gonna be every kind of musical derivation that our imaginations can conjuer up from technique, language to equipment.

I can remember my mom taking me to a classic guitar teacher when I was 16 years old. This guy played some contrapuntal fingerpicking stuff for me and I was into rock so I laughed at him. He played his heart out for me and I thought it was lightweight for my taste. I had NO understanding of classical music or appreciation and was a snotnosed metal kid. He gave me a dirty look chuckled wistfully to himself and told my mom he wouldn't teach me, but later on he DID(I still have those Christopher Parkening books around.)

To me there's absolutely NO GROWTH in the metal community when it comes to language, versatility in application, and trust me I've heard pretty much everything from doom to extrem to speed to prog. [img]eek.gif[/img]
